Abstract
1,109,469. Spark gaps. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. 10 March, 1966 [12 March, 1965], No. 10665/66. Headings H1D and H1X. One of the electrodes of an enclosed or unenclosed spark-gap is of inductive form, includes an auxiliary spark-gap, and is magnetically coupled with an inductor connected to a source of triggering pulses. The auxiliary spark gap is formed by a gap between two parts of the electrode. The two parts may consist of a helically coiled portion 24, Fig. 2, having one end attached to the electrode stem 22 and its free end 25 spaced from the free end 23 of the other part 21 which extends axially from the electrode stem. Alternatively, the first part may be in the form of a planar spiral (Fig. 4, not shown) or a single ring (Fig. 5, not shown) interrupted by a gap, the latter forming the triggering gap, and the peripheral edge of the ring constituting the electrode surface for the main gap. The looped part of the electrode may be embedded in a mass of fibre-glass, Fig. 3, and the main electrode stem may have a core of ferrite 28 and a longitudinal slot 27 to reduce eddy currents. The coil for providing the triggering magnetic field may be incorporated in an end wall of an enclosure for the generator, or in the lateral wall if both main electrodes incorporate an auxiliary gap.
