Abstract

Reinforcing fillers comprising thermosetting resins of the phenolic type having a density of 0.8-1.25 gms./c.c. are incorporated in the vulcanized rubber or rubber-like material used in the manufacture of playball-shells. Examples describe the manufacture of playball-shells from compositions containing natural rubber, polybutadiene, a phenolic resin having about 8% of a formaldehyde donor, sulphur, zinc oxide, stearic acid, an aromatic oil, dibenzthiazyl disulphide and (a) tetramethyl thiuram disulphide and furnace black (b) diphenyl guanidine, benzoic acid and an antioxidant and (c) tetramethyl thiuram disulphide, furnace black, sodium nitrite and ammonium chloride.ALSO:A playball-shell comprises a self-supporting hollow sphere of a vulcanised rubber or rubber-like composition in which is present a reinforcing filler comprising a thermosetting synthetic resin of the phenolic type having a density of 0.8 - 1.25 gms./cc. The resin may be a phenolic resin incorporating a formaldehyde donor.
