Abstract

In a tube/header connection, a thin-walled tube 10 extends through an aperture 12 in a header wall 11 and the edges 13 of the tube end are brazed or welded at 16 to the rim face 14 of a rim 15 extending around the aperture on one side of the wall, the diameter of said aperture over a portion not exceeding a quarter of the depth of the aperture extending from said rim face being the same as that of the tube outside diameter so that the tube is a close fit therein whilst the remainder of the aperture is flared outwardly from the tube surface. In the embodiment shown, the rim 15 is formed by an annular groove cut in the wall. In a modified embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the rim is formed by a cone-shaped member welded to one side of the header wall. The connection finds particular application in securing palladium or palladium alloy tubes in the header wall of hydrogen purifying plant.
