Abstract

A process for improving the properties of cast or sintered beryllium-base alloys comprises swaging the alloy in a jacket at a temperature between 400 DEG and 700 DEG C., and annealing the alloy at a temperature above its recrystallization temperature. Before swaging, the alloy may be extruded at 800 DEG to 1000 DEG C. Binary or ternary alloys of beryllium with calcium, zirconium and magnesium are referred to. The alloy may be encased in a jacket of iron, copper or mild steel which may be alloyed with copper. If a tube of the alloy is used, it is encased internally and externally and may be swaged on a mandrel or plug. In an example, a beryllium-calcium rod containing 0.4% Ca was extruded at 950 DEG C. in a mild steel jacket. The rod was then swaged at 420 DEG C. in four passes with intermediate annealing, and finally annealed at 750 DEG C. for four hours.
