Abstract

1,107,415. Unwinding; straightening. I. UNGERER. 11 June, 1965 [13 June, 1964], No. 24800/65. Heading B3E. Apparatus for lifting, pre-straightening and transporting the beginning of a strip of material which is to be unwound from a supply coil comprises an upper and a lower roller and a wedge member, the rollers being adjustable in respect of their distance apart and their respective distances from the supply coil and being arranged to draw the beginning of the strip from the supply coil over the wedge and to pass the strip between them, at least one of the rollers being driven, the rollers being adjustable so that the angle to the vertical of the plane containing their axes can be varied. A wedge member 11 on the end of a pivoted support 13 is brought up against a coil 10, as shown, by piston and cylinder means 14, a roller 8, on an arm 4 pivoted at 1 to an arm 3 pivoted to the support 13, being in a raised position away from a roller 6 on the support 13. The strip is then fed off the coil 10, by an auxiliary roller 15, over the wedge 11 and between the rollers 6, 8, whereupon the coil feed is stopped and the roller 8 lowered by piston and cylinder means 2 to grip the strip against the roller 6. The assembly is then moved away from the coil 10 by the piston and cylinder means 14, the strip being thereby drawn from the coil. Piston and cylinder means 7 then operates to rock the arms 3, 4 and move the roller 8 counterclockwise around the roller 6. Strip is then fed off the coil by the roller 15 and by driving the roller 6, the arrangement of the rollers 8, 6 serving to straighten the strip fed therethrough. The strip then passes over a table 23 to a roller leveller 25, the roller 8 being then raised to disengage the strip. The parts may be actuated by motor-driven spindles. Instead of being pivoted at 28 the apparatus may be mounted on means movable up to or away from the coil.
