Abstract

In a crimping process, undrawn synthetic thermoplastic yarn, which may have been formed from freshly extruded continuous filaments, is hot or cold drawn at normal drawing speeds and false-twist crimped without any intermediate winding-up. The false-twisting is effected by frictional driving contact of the yarn with one or more surfaces moving transversely of the direction of advance of the yarn and moving in such direction with the yarn, e.g. as provided by surfaces arranged in a circulatory path in the manner described in Specification 1,085,052. The yarn may be heated additionally, e.g. by reverse passage through a single heater, before or after the false-twist crimping, perhaps with an additional false-twisting step, to prepare the yarn or modify the crimp properties thereof. The, or a first, false-twist apparatus may contribute to, or effect in full, the drawing of the yarn.
