Abstract

1,106,141. Reciprocating pumps. R. A. McCARTHY. May 18, 1965 [Feb. 20, 1964], No. 7234/64. Headings F1A and F1B. An I. C. engine-driven pump comprises a doubleacting pumping piston 10 either connected by a rod 7 to a single engine piston 8 or mounted on a rod between two engine pistons Fig. 2 (not shown), liquid flow to and from the pump being controlled by rotary values with ports 13 actuated through gearing 12, 21 by pins 11 on the pump connecting rod engaging cam members 22 on the gear train at the end of each stroke. An electrically driven pump may be used for supplying pressure liquid to the pump inlet for starting the engine and maintaining the pressure in a circuit supplied by the pump. The circuit pressure acting on the pump piston effects or assists the compression stroke of the engine piston. A value may be provided to release liquid from the pump cylinder when the gas pressure in the engine cylinder falls below the pressure in the circuit supplied by the pump. The engine may be two or four stroke and spark or compression ignition. The gear train also drives an ignition distributor 14.
