Abstract
A method of forming a polymer coating on an article having a cutting edge comprises passing a glow discharge through a gaseous monomer, from which the polymer is to be formed, adjacent to the article whereby a polymer coating is formed on the article. The monomer may be a hydrocarbon, halogen-substituted hydrocarbon or alkylsiloxane. Specified articles are razor blades, surgical scalpels, culinary knives and garden tools. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the method of the invention is described and illustrated, and examples describe the coating of razor blades by passing glow discharges through (I) 1-hydroperfluoropropane and (II and III) dibromodifluoromethane, and the coating of knife edges by passing glow discharges through (IV) ethylene.ALSO:Polymer coatings are formed on articles having cutting edges by a method wherein a gaseous monomer is treated by passing a glow discharge therethrough and the treated gas contacts the article and deposits thereon to form the polymer coating. Specified articles are razor blades, surgical scalpels, culinary knives and garden tools. The monomer may be a hydrocarbon, halogen-substituted hydrocarbon or alkyl siloxane, and may be mixed with an inert diluent gas. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the method is described and illustrated and examples describe the coating of razor blades by glow discharge polymerisation of (I) 1-hydroperfluoropropane and (II and III) dibromodifluoromethane, and the coating of knife edges by glow discharge polymerisation of ethylene.ALSO:Surgical scalpels and hypodermic needles are provided with polymer coatings by a method wherein a gaseous monomer is treated by passing a glow discharge therethrough and the treated gas contacts the scalpel or needle and deposits thereon in the form of a polymer coating. The monomer may be a hydrocarbon, halogen-substituted hydrocarbon or alkyl siloxane, particularly 1-hydroperfluoropropane, dibromodifluoromethane or ethylene, optionally mixed with an inert diluent gas.
