To render a burner capable of operating efficiently on either town gas or a low burning velocity gas such as butane, propane or methane, there is provided between the burner body 10 and the head 13, having a ring of flame ports 14, a flame retention ring 16 providing flame ports of smaller depth to produce a ring or thin sheet of flame.
