Abstract
1,105,594. Mechanical seals. TRISTS MOULDINGS & SEALS Ltd. 3 April, 1967 [14 April, 1966], No. 16449/66. Heading F2B. In a shaft seal comprising a sleeve 14 slidably mounted around a rotary shaft 1 and carrying a sealing ring 15 urged by spring pressure acting axially on the sleeve into contact with a tapered surface 8 rigid with the shaft, the shaft housing 2 is provided with a liner 9 of non- corrodible material and the sleeve is sealed to the liner by two axially-spaced sealing rings 18 and 26 forming an annular space 30 between the sleeve and the liner which is filled with grease. The ring 18 is an 0-ring housed in a groove 19 in the sleeve and the ring 26 is a felt washer clamped in a recess 28 in the liner. The surface 8 is formed on a ring 4 made in halves joined by bolts 5 and the sleeve 14 is urged towards the ring 4 by springs 23 compressed by nuts 25 on studs 13 which project through notches 22 in a flange 21 on the sleeve. Grease is injected into the space 30 through a passage 31 in the liner. The sleeve 14 is of glass fibre reinforced polyester resin and the liner 9 is of stainless steel.
