Abstract

1,104,922. Clamps. AVICA EQUIPMENT Ltd. 9, Sept., 1964 [1, Aug., 1963], No. 30605/ 63. Heading E2B. A pipe coupling clamp comprises two half clamps 2, the inside surfaces of which are grooved to receive mating flanges of two pipes to be coupled, the sides of the grooves being inclined at approximately the same angle as the outer surface of the V flanges so that tightening of the clamp around the flanges of the pipes to be coupled, forces the mating faces of the two flanges into tight engagement to provide a fluid type joint between the pipes, the two half clamps being adapted to be fastened together at one side by a bolt 6 hinged at one of its ends to one half clamp and having its other end screwed to receive a nut 11 arranged in use to engage the other half clamp either directly or through the intermediary of a saddle washer 12, the other side of the clamps being connected together by means of a connecting link 8 each end of which is pivotally connected to one of the half clamps respectively. In the construction shown each end of each of the half clamps is formed with a pair of arms 14, the link 8 is positioned between the arms 14 of adjacent ends and connected to them by means of pivot pins 16, and the bolt is connected between a pair of arms 14 by a pivot pin 10 and passes between the arms of the adjacent end of the other half clamp. The saddle washer 12 has one side convex to engage in a concave seating in the arms 14. The nut 11 is self locking. In a modification a strap is provided to prevent complete separation of the half clamps if the bolt should break; the strap is U shaped and in each arm is a slot which is connected to the pivot pin 10 for the bolt by spinning over the ends of the pin. Each arm of the strap is also provided with an inwardly facing projection and these projections engage corresponding grooves in the arms 14 of the other half clamp to prevent the strap from falling off the said arms. The web of the strap is provided with a hole through which the bolt passes and the web is positioned between the nut and the saddle washer. In a modification the projections are provided on the half clamp which is engaged by the saddle washer and the strap is provided with the grooves for the recesses.
