Abstract

A shaped article of vinyl chloride resin is formed by a method in which a diene monomer alone, or a mixture of 99 to 30% by weight of a diene monomer and 1 to 70% by weight of a styrene monomer, with or without a third monomer, is grafted on to pulverulent vinyl chloride resin by means of ionizing radiation, to give a graft vinyl chloride resin containing from 2 to 30% by weight of the grafted components, and the graft resin is milled at a temperature within the range of 100 DEG to 200 DEG C. and shaped by moulding. The vinyl chloride resin, which may be a homopolymer or a copolymer of a major proportion of vinyl chloride with a minor proportion of a vinyl ester or vinyl ether, is subjected to irradiation either before or during contact with the monomers. The third monomer is, e.g. a derivative of acrylic or methacrylic acid, or acrylonitrile. In the examples, polyvinyl chloride is irradiated with an electron beam prior to being placed in a methanol solution of butadiene, butadiene-styrene, isoprene, isoprene-styrene, or butadiene-a -methyl styrene and carrying out graft polymerization. Similarly, a vinyl chloride-vinyl cetyl ether copolymer is grafted with butadiene or butadiene-styrene. In other examples, polyvinyl chloride is immersed in a methanol solution of butadiene or butadiene-styrene and irradiated with CO-60 gamma-rays to produce the graft polymers. The products are mixed with components selected from ungrafted polyvinyl chloride, polybutadiene, tin mercaptide, butyl stearate, barium stearate and dioctyl phthalate prior to being milled and moulded
