Abstract

Cyanine and merocyanine dyes are obtained by quaternizing 2 - ethylmercapto - 5 - acetylamino-thiazole and condensing the quaternary salt obtained with a heterocyclic base containing a reactive methyl or keto-methylene group. The invention also comprises cyanine and merocyanine dyes of the formula <FORM:1103334/C4-C5/1> <FORM:1103334/C4-C5/2> where R and R1 are each alkyl, aryl or aralkyl, completes a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic nucleus which may be substituted, n is 1 or 2 and X is an anion. Examples of the dyes are given, including those of the formulae <FORM:1103334/C4-C5/3> <FORM:1103334/C4-C5/4>
