Abstract
A metal article is diffusion coated with a metallic material by heating in a non-oxidizing atmosphere in contact with a pack comprising the coating metal, a carrier and a metallic control component which forms an inter-metallic compound with the coating metal thereby inhibiting the rate of transfer of the coating metal from the pack without itself being transferred. Fe, Ni, Co, Cr, Mo, W and their alloys may be coated with Al, Cr, Fe, Si or Cu. The pack may contain alumina or kaolin filler. The control component may be Ni, Cr, Co, Va, Mo, C, Si, Be, B, Fe or SiC and the carrier iodine or an ammonium halide, aluminides may form during heating.
