Abstract
In a process for the diffusion of metals into iron or steel the iron or steel is heated to at least 700 DEG C. in contact with one or more of the metals chromium, vanadium, molybdenum, niobium, tantalum, titanium, zirconium, manganese, nickel, cobalt, copper, and silicon and alloys of these metals and in the presence of sufficient ammonium chloride or an amine hydrochloride, such as methylamine hydrochloride or aniline hydrochloride, to produce a chlorinating atmosphere. The article to be treated may be packed in the diffusing metal in a container with a calculated quantity of ammonium chloride to produce a desired coating and heated to a temperature between 700 DEG C. and 1,200 DEG C. Potassium chlorate, bleaching powder, charcoal or an amine may be added to modify the atmosphere. Specifications 572,703, 574,737, 575,676 and 577,504 are referred to.
