Abstract
110,179. Hoglund, E. J. Oct. 5, 1916. Drilling - ma - chines. - Consists of a power driven instrument f o r trephining p u r - poses, combining a drill and a chainsaw cutting tool. The driving-shaft 6, which is secured to one end of a flexible shaft 3 driven by an electro-motor, is journaled in the handle 1 and carries at its front end a clutch member 12, whereby the drill 17, mounted on a clutch 15, is driven. A pin 16, entering a broad circular groove in the shaft 6, allows of the necessary axial movement. To control the depth of movement through the cranium, a stop-rod 19, Fig. 4, is screwed into a bracket 18 on the handle, adjustment being effected by a knurled head 20. The sawing device, to manipulate which an additional handle 10 at right-angles to the main handle is provided. comprises a chain-saw 25, Fig. 7, passing around a sprocket 13 mounted between two guides 11, 12, and at the lower end around a grooved guide 24 formed on an adjustable stem 22. A ball 30 on the end of a spring-controlled rod 27 bears on the upper side of the skull. In operation, a small hole is drilled through the skull, and the saw inserted in the opening; when the saw-cut has been started, the upper shoulder of the guide 24 i; pressed upwards against the inner surface of the skull by means of the spring-controlled ball 30.
