Mechanism for testing coins for diameter, thickness, weight, and the presence of a rim and a milled edge, comprises a rail 5 which delivers a coin into a cradle comprising a platform 12 and pawl 16 on a member 10 pivoted at 11 on the outside of a back plate 1, the elements 12 and 16 moving in slots 13, 15 in the plate. Too thin a coin falls between rail 5 and plate 6 along reject path 9. A coin of too small diameter passes between elements 12, 16 along a reject path 9<SP>1</SP>. Too thick a coin is arrested by an adjustable stop 8, being released along path 9 by a reject button (not shown) which eases plate 6 away from rail 5. Member 10 is weighted at 17, so that a coin of sufficient weight rocks the member to deliver the coin on to rail 20. A coin of insufficient weight is retained, and pulled off the cradle to follow reject path 9 by the reject button by a finger 18 on plate 6 working in a slot 19 in plate 1 behind the coin. A coin of acceptable diameter but without a milled edge contacts a nose 16a on pawl 16 and raises it, passing on to reject path 9<SP>1</SP> Milling on the edge, however, is engaged by nose 16a to arrest the coin. A coin so far acceptable, rolls down rail 20, and passes between spring- biased balls 24, 26. If the coin has no rim, it passes on down a reject path 9<SP>11</SP>. If it has a rim, however, the balls temporarily retain the coin, which swings about its point of contact with the balls until it abuts a stop so placed that the inertia of the coin frees it from the balls, and it follows an accept path 35. The spacing and spring bias of the balls may be adjustable, and the spring bias may be replaced by magnetic attraction between the balls.
