Abstract
Heat polymerizable lactams which can be stored below 50 DEG C. and polymerized on heating without further additions are obtained by intimately mixing in the solid state at below 50 DEG C. (1) a metal salt of a lactam or mixture of such salt and lactam, (2) a lactam carrying an electrophilic N-substituent or a mixture thereof with a lactam and (3) a lactam in such proportions that the mixture contains 0.01 to 5 mole per cent of each of the salt and the N-substituted lactam. Ingredient (1) may be obtained by adding a conventional anionic catalyst to a lactam or excess thereof and (2) may be similarly obtained from lactam and such compounds as isocyanates, carbodimides or carboxylic acid derivatives capable of acylating lactams. Specified lactams are decyllic and undecyllic lactams and laurolactam, which is used in the example. The mixture may also contain a regulator, e.g. acetamide or benzamide, and may be polymerized at 140 DEG to 300 DEG C.
