Abstract

Flexible cellular polyurethanes of density below 16 kg./m3 are prepared by reacting a polyalkylene ether polyol with a polyisocyanate in the presence of a blowing agent consisting of water and a halogenated hydrocarbon whose B.P. is not greater than 43 DEG C. in a molar ratio of halogenated hydrocarbon to water between 0.5:1 and 2.2:1, the water being present in an amount of at least 6 parts per 100 parts by weight of the polyol. The polyalkylene-ether polyol may be a diol or triol. The polyisocyanate may be aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic and may be used in an amount to give an -NCO to active hydrogen atom in the polyol ratio of 0.9:1 to 1.5:1. The halogenated hydrocarbon may be a fluorocarbon which may be substituted in addition by chlorine. Conventional tertiary amine and organotin catalysts may be included in the reaction mixture.
