Abstract
1,097,226. Contacting liquids and vapours. UNION OIL CO. OF CALIFORNIA. Jan. 22, 1965. No. 2978/65. Heading B1R. In appartus wherein a liquid is contacted with a vapour, a mixture of liquid and vapour is distributed over a packed bed 102, which may be a bed of a granular catalyst, from an inlet 14 through a tray 18 of the "bubble-cap" type, the skirts of the "bubble-caps" being slotted and liquid entrained from a pool of the liquid on the plate by the vapour as it passes up the annular space between the "bubble-cap" and the tube extending through an orifice in the plate and surmounted by the "bubble-cap". The liquid/vapour contacting zone may be divided into superposed zones each zones having a tray for distributing liquid and vapour over a packed bed. In a space between two zones a gas may be added to quench a descending liquid/vapour mixture when the contact between the liquid and vapour involves a reaction at elevated temperatures. The descending liquid and vapour and the quench gas may pass through a plate 206 (Fig. 10 not shown) into a box 210 discharging on to a second plate 214 and thence to a distributing tray 18.
