Abstract

Telomers obtained from tetrafluoroethylene and a telogen RI, where R is a C1- 20 perfluoroalkyl, hydroperfluoroalkyl, chloroperfluoroalkyl, bromoperfluoroalkyl or iodoperfluoroalkyl group free of branching on the a -carbon atom (see Division C2) are of use as hydraulic oils; and, if the iodine is replaced by hydrogen or other halogens, are of use as lubricating oils or hydraulic liquids.ALSO:Telomers are prepared by heating a gaseous mixture of tetrafluoroethylene with at least one mole excess of a telogen RI, where R is a C1- 20 perfluoroalkyl, hydroperfluoroalkyl, chloroperfluoroalkyl, bromoperfluoroalkyl or iodoperfluoroalkyl group free of branching on the a -carbon atom, at 240-450 DEG C. for from 1 second to 10 minutes, at least some of the tetrafluoroethylene remaining unconverted. In examples, C2F4 is reacted with C7F15I, CF3I, HCF2CF2I, ClCF2CF2I, ICF2CF2I and C2F5I. The products and their reaction products are lubricating or hydraulic oils (Division C5).
