Abstract
The invention comprises bisphenols of the general formula <FORM:1095959/C2/1> in which X is bromine, chlorine, iodine or fluorine; Y is methyl, bromine, iodine, chlorine or fluorine, and n is 0-3. They are prepared by reacting the corresponding halogen-substituted acetones with the appropriate phenols. Alternatively, a substituted acetone may be reacted with the phenol and the product halogenated in the benzene nuclei.ALSO:Bis-phenols of the general formula <FORM:1095959/A5-A6/1> in which X is bromine, chlorine, iodine or fluorine; Y is methyl, bromine, iodine, chlorine or fluorine; and n is 0-3, are used as germicides. They may, for example, be incorporated in cloth, paper, leather, wood or in detergent compositions, e.g. in toilet soaps consisting of the sodium and potassium salts of fatty acids from tallow, olive oil and palm oil.
