Abstract
1,095,812. Thermoelectric devices. ENGELHARD INDUSTRIES Inc. Sept. 9, 1965 [Sept. 10, 1964], No. 38623/65. Heading H1K. A thermocouple assembly comprises a thermocouple made of tungsten alloys enclosed in a sheath of an iridium-rhodium alloy. A pair of thermocouples 11, 12, Fig. 2 (not shown) are enclosed in a sheath 14 of iridium-rhodium alloy brazed to a mounting flange 23, Fig. 1, to which is brazed a metal shell 19 provided with vitreous ceramic lead-outs 20 for the thermocouple wires 17. The sheath is packed with granular beryllia crystals 16 in an argon atmosphere to electrically insulate the thermocouples. Sheath 14 is closed by a plug 15 of iridiumrhodium alloy. The assembly may be used for measuring the temperature at the hottest part of a gas turbine engine. One of the thermocouples (12) in the sheath may be used as a " glow plug " to ignite the gas mixture and for this purpose the current supply may be controlled by the signal of the other thermocouple which acts as a flame-out detector. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), thermocouple (12) may be replaced by a plain loop (27) of wire which acts as a heating element. The insulation 16 may be of other metallic oxides or ceramic cements, and the sheath may contain another inert gas instead of argon or may be evacuated.
