Abstract

Novel compounds of formula <FORM:1093355/C2/1> where R is hydrogen, halogen, an alkyl group having not more than four carbon atoms, or an alkoxy group, and R1 is halogen, an alkyl group having not more than four carbon atoms or an alkoxy group, are prepared by condensing cyanobenzoyl chloride or cyanobenzaldehyde with a 2-aminobenzene thiol, and reacting the resulting cyanophenylbenzothiazole with hydrogen peroxide and an alkali metal hydroxide. Therapeutic compositions having anti-inflammatory activity comprise as active ingredient 2-carbamoylphenyl - benzothiazoles of the formula given above. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,044,361.
