A hydrogen electrode of a fuel cell comprises a pore-free foil of hydrogen-absorbing metal with a porous coating of an alloy of either tantalum or palladium with one or two of Pt, Rh, Au, Ag, Cu, Li, Co, Fe, B. The coating may be made from a solution.
