Abstract
1,089,332. Rolling. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Dec. 15, 1964 [Sept. 30, 1963], No. 21240/63. Heading B3M. [Also in Division G4] In a rolling mill, the length of a workpiece which has passed through the rolls is measured by a pulse emitter 19 and counter 21, and the distance between the rolls is varied in accordance with this measurement so as to shape the workpiece. Potentiometer 15 provides a bias voltage corresponding to the minimum desired thickness of the workpiece and potentiometer 14 provides a voltage corresponding to the actual distance between the rolls for comparison with the output of a digital to analogue converter 22. Comparator 17 controls the distance between the rolls, e.g. by an hydraulic actuator. Potentiometer 23 provides a variable reference for converter 22 so that the rate of change of thickness with axial position of the workpiece may be varied. A limit switch 20 is provided to interrupt the counting of pulses so as to produce portions of uniform thickness on the workpiece.
