Abstract

Novel compounds of formula <FORM:1088295/C2/1> in which R1, R2, R3 and R4 each represent an alkyl group having from 1-4 carbon atoms, an alkoxy group having from 1-4 carbon atoms, a halogen atom or a trifluoromethyl group, n is 2 or 3, and each of m, p, q, and r is 0 or 1, are prepared (1) by reacting an alkali metal salt of a phenol of formula <FORM:1088295/C2/2> with an alkali metal salt of an o -haloacid of formula X-(CH2)n-COOH in which X is a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom, reducing the nitro group of the o -phenoxyalkanoic acid formed and acylating the resultant amine with an appropriately substituted benzoic acid halide or anhydride, (2) when n = 2 by reacting an alkali metal salt of a phenol of Formula II with b -propiolactone, reducing the nitro group of the o -phenoxyalkanoic acid so formed with hydrogen and a palladium/charcoal catalyst except in the case where m = 0, p = 1 and R2 = 4-chloro when reduction is carried out with sodium dithionite, and acylating the resultant amine with an appropriately substituted benzoic acid halide or anhydride, or (3) when n = 3 by reacting an alkali metal salt of a phenol of formula <FORM:1088295/C2/3> with a lower alkyl ester of an o -haloacid of formula X-(CH2)n-COOH wherein n = 3, and hydrolysing the ester so formed with an alkali metal hydroxide. Amides of Formula V are obtained by acylating the corresponding aminophenol.
