1,086,343. Tunnelling machines; tunnelling shields. BETEILIGUNGS-UND PATENTVERWALTUNGS G.m.b.H. Feb. 25, 1966 [Feb. 27, 1965], No. 8468/66. Heading E1F. Behind the rotary cutter means of a tunnelling machine there is positioned across the shield of the machine a louvre system which, when the machine is working in unstable soil, is closed to prevent fall-in of soil into the shield and, for stable soil, is open to expose the face. The louvre panels may be independently opened to allow of hand excavating of parts of the face if such operations are required by face conditions.
