Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of formulae <FORM:1085080/C2/1> <FORM:1085080/C2/2> wherein R1 and R2 are each hydrogen, hydroxy or C1- 6 alkoxy, or together form an alkylenedioxy group, R3 is hydrogen or C1- 6 alkyl, R4 i hydrogen, hydroxy or C1- 6 acyloxy, R5 is hydrogen, C1- 6 alkyl, alkenyl, acyl, carbamyl, di - (C1- 6 alkyl) - carbamyl or C2- 7 alkoxy-carbonyl or R4 and R5 together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a keto or cyclic ketal group, n is 1 or 2 and m is 0 or 1, and their preparation by treating a compound of formula <FORM:1085080/C2/3> with nitrosyl chloride at 30-120 DEG C. and contacting the product with an hydroxylic solvent, optionally containing perchloric acid, to form a quaternary compound of the invention, followed if desired by reduction of the isolated double bond.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions having cardiovascular and anti-inflammatory activity comprise, in combination with a carrier, a compound of formula: <FORM:1085080/A5-A6/1> <FORM:1085080/A5-A6/2> wherein R1 and R2 are each hydrogen, hydroxy or C1-6 alkoxy or together form an alkylenedioxy group, R3 is hydrogen or C1-4 alkyl R4 is hydrogen, hydroxy or C1-6 acyloxy, R5 is hydrogen, C1-6 alkyl, alkenyl, acyl, carbamyl, di-(C1-6 alkyl) carbamyl or C2-7 alkoxy-carbonyl, or R4 and R5 together with the carbon atom to which they are attached form a keto or cyclic ketal group, n is 1 or 2 and m is 0 or 1. The compositions may be in forms suitable for oral, parenteral or rectal administration and may include other pharmaceutically active compounds, for example tranquilisers, antibiotics, analgesics or cardiovascular agents.
