Abstract
A medicated lozenge comprises a hard candy base consisting essentially of sucrose and glucose having dispersed therein from 2-16% by wt. of a mixture of a medicament and a polyethylene glycol having an average M.W. in the range 4,000-20,000. The lozenges may be prepared by first preparing a molten candy base consisting essentially of sucrose and glucose, separately heating a mixture of the powdered medicament and an appropriate polyethylene glycol until a uniform dispersion or solution of the medicament in the polyethylene glycol is obtained, blending the said dispersion or solution with the molten candy base in an amount of from 2-16% by wt., and forming the blend into lozenges. The Examples describe the preparation of lozenges containing acetaminophen, aluminium aspirin, salicylamide, acetylsalicylic acid, cyproheptadine tannate, 4-hexylresorcinol, phenylpropanolamine, phenylephrine hydrochloride, and d-methorphan tannate.
