1,084,125. Cleaning tubes. M. M. KNAPP and H. J. GIRARD. June 22, 1965, No. 26436/65. Heading F2N. A plug 10 for cleaning pipes or separating fluids in pipes comprises a cylindrical resilient body 1, e.g. polyurethane, and a helical band of abrasive material 2 on the cylindrical surface of the body, said body being compressed by the fluid pressure differential driving the plug through the pipe and thereby increasing the pressure of the band against the pipe wall. The abrasive material, such as sand, glass, diamond dust, silicon carbide, short bristles, and/or fine rouge, may be disposed in the surface of the body or secured upon the surface by a binding material 3 such as an epoxy. Impermeable membranes 5 and 7 are secured to the trailing and leading plug ends respectively. Frictional engagement between the pipe wall and the helical band causes a rifling action which, together with plug-driving, pressure differential expands the non-abrasive body portions against the pipe wall, as illustrated at 11 in Fig. 2 (not shown), said portions performing a pipe-wiping action.
