Abstract

[Also in Divisions C3 and C5] The invention comprises novel organo-tin compounds of general formula in which each of R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> is an aryloxyaryl group, containing two or three benzene rings and n is an integer. They are prepared by the general reaction of aryloxyaryl magnesium halides with a tin dihalide. The compounds are generaly low polymers with n up to 10 and the polymeric form is obtained from the monomer upon standing. The benzene rings may be fused or separate. Grignard reagents that may be used are para-phenoxyphenylmagnesium bromide, meta-phenoxyphenylmagnesium bromide, para - (para - biphenylyloxy) phenylmagnesium bromide and para-naphthyloxyphenylmagnesium bromide. The reactions are carried out under anhydrous conditions in an organic solvent, which may be an acyclic ether, e.g. diethyl ether or the dimethyl ether of ethylene glycol or a cyclic ether, e.g. tetrahydrofuran and at a temperature of 50- 150‹ C., e.g. reflux temperature. The compounds, which are used as additives to lubricant compositions comprising a polyphenyl ether or polyphenyl polyether or a mixture of both, may be bis-(phenoxyphenyl) tin, bis- (diphenylylhoxyphenyl) tin, bis-(phenyloxydiphenylyl) tin, bis-(naphthyloxyphenyl) tin and (biphenylyloxyphenyl)(phenoxyphenyl) tin.
