Abstract

A gasoline additive comprises (i) 90-95 weight per cent of the product obtained by reacting an alkenyl succinic anhydride of formula <FORM:1083549/C4-C5/1> where R and R1 are both either hydrogen or hydrocarbyl radicals provided that at least one is hydrocarbon and the total number of carbon atoms in R and R1 combined is 40-250, with an imidazoline or tetrahydropyrimidine prepared by reacting a carboxylic acid with an aliphatic polyamine of formula H2N(CH2)n(NH(CH2)n)m NH(CH2)nNH2 where n is 2 or 3 and m is 0-10; and (ii) 10-5% of a mixture of 30-90% of an alkyl benzene sulphonic acid and from 70-10% of the reaction product of a polyoxyalkylene glycol of molecular weight 200-800 and a polymeric carboxylic acid, e.g. trilinoleic acid. Gasolines containing the additives may also contain conventional additives e.g. hexylene glycol and tetraethyl lead.ALSO:An alkenyl succinic anhydride of formula <FORM:1083549/C3/1> where R and R1 are both either hydrogen or hydrocarbyl radicals provided that at least one is hydrocarbon and R+R1 is C40-C250, is reacted with an imidazoline or tetrahydropyrimidine of formula <FORM:1083549/C3/2> where R11 is C1-C30 hydrocarbon radical, n is 2 or 3 and m is 0-10 which is obtained by reacting an aliphatic polyamine of formula <FORM:1083549/C3/3> with a monocarboxylic acid of formula R11COOH.
