Abstract
An increased yield of the antibiotic moenomycin is achieved in its manufacture by microbiological fermentation (see Specification 977,327) of a moenomycin-producing strain of Streptomyces bambergiensis ATCC No. 13879, Streptomyces ghanaensis ATCC No. 14672, Streptomyces enderensis nov. spec. 2861 or Streptomyces geyiriensis nov. spec. 3888, wherein animal and/or vegetable fats are used as sources of carbon. Animal fat, e.g. lard or knackerey fat, may be used in a concentration from 0.1 to 10% by weight. As vegetable fats, oils, e.g. soya-bean oil, may be used. The fats may be used as the sole carbon source or together with other carbon sources, e.g. sugars.
