Form according to German patent specification 1113 791 Streptomyces ghanaensis and some other Streptomycetes an antibiotic substance that Moenomycin. In the cited patent it is stated that the fermentation takes place under aerobic conditions in an aqueous medium which, in addition to inorganic salts as a carbon source, contains starch, Glucose, cane sugar or molasses and, as a nitrogen source, soy meal, cornsteel liquor, yeast extract, Cottonseed or sprout meal contains nitrates or ammonium salts, up to a maximum antibiotic activity is carried out. In the example, a nutrient solution made of 4% starch sugar, 3 4% soy meal and 0.25% NaCl indicated.
B. Sojabohnenöl, in Frage. It has now been found that the moenomycin formation of the abovementioned Streptomycetes completely can be increased significantly if animal or vegetable fats are used as the carbon source will. The fats can be used as the sole carbon source and also together with other carbon sources, such as B. sugar can be used. Have proven useful as animal fats z. B. carcass fat or lard in concentrations of 0.1 to 10.0%, preferably 0.5 to 5.0%. The vegetable fats are oils, ζ. B. soybean oil in question. The moenomycin formation was thereby increased from 300 to 400 U / ml to 700 to 800 U / ml.
For microorganisms, fats are usually more difficult to digest than carbohydrates. It had to be expected be that when using fats as a carbon source, the yield of moenomycin is lower than when using carbohydrates. It was therefore surprising and not to be expected in use Moenomycin formation is increased very significantly by fats.

A culture of S. bambergensis was inoculated on a sterile culture solution of the following composition: 2% soy meal, 0.5% cottonseed meal, 0.5% cornsteel liquor, 0.25% NaCl, 0.25% NaNO 3 , 0.05% KH 2 PO 4 , 1.5% carcass fat, 0.5% soybean oil, 1.0% sucrose. Fermentation was carried out at 32 ° C. for 120 hours with intensive stirring and aeration. 765 units of moenomycin were formed per milliliter.
