Abstract

The residual liquid from the fermentation of molasses is treated with a cation exchanger to replace potassium ions in the liquid with ammonium ions. The cation exchanger is then regenerated, for example by treating with ammonium phosphate, a ternary liquid fertilizer containing 4-8% of ammoniacal nitrogen, 10-20% P2O5, and 10-70% K2O being obtained.ALSO:The residual liquid from the fermentation of molasses is heated with a cation-exchanger to replace potassium ions in the liquid with ammonium ions, to give a nitrogen rich product which may be used as constituent of animal foods. The cation-exchanger may be regenerated for example by treating with a solution of ammonium phosphate, a polassium rich liquor suitable for use as a fertilizer being thus additionally obtained.
