Abstract
1,081,268. Cable ships. PIRELLI SOCIETA PER AZIONI. June 6, 1966 [June 18, 1965], No. 25200/66. Headings B7A and B7V. [Also in Division F2] A vessel for laying or raising an elongated submarine member such as an electric cable (3) has a hull (1), circular in plan, for rotation in the water about the axis of an annular tank (2) for the member (3) supported by the hull, a turret (4) around which the hull can rotate, and propulsion means for effecting translation of the vessel and rotation of the hull relative to the turret to pay out or draw in the member without twisting it. In one embodiment (Figs. 1 and 2), the hull is rotated by screw propellers (11) in the bottom thereof and translated by a propeller (7) at the bottom of an extension of the turret, the member (3) being paid out over a track (8) fixed to the turret and supported on wheels (12, 13) on the hull. In other embodiments the turret is supported on the hull and rotation and translation are both effected by suitably controlling the propellers (11) which may be in the bottom of the hull or at the ends of two arms rigidly connected to the turret (Fig. 5, not shown), in which latter case the support wheels (13) are driven to rotate the hull.
