Abstract

1,080,403. Caps for bottles &c. AMERICAN FLANGE & MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. May 28, 1965 [June 5, 1964], No. 22755/65. Heading B8T. A metal closure cap 1 for a bottle, jar, can &c. comprises a flat, circular top portion 2, a tear strip 15 and an annular skirt 3 down which extends a pair of score lines 13, 14, the tear strip having a longitudinally elongated hole 23 and terminating in a gripping ear 6. Notches 21, 22 are formed at the edge 5 of the skirt on either side of the score lines 13, 14, which extend either substantially parallel across the inner surface of the top portion of the cap, or may diverge away from each other in curved or straight lines. Alternatively, the score lines 13, 14 extend across the outer surface of the cap. A lining or gasket (40), Fig. 7 (not shown), is placed over the bottle bead (51) and the metal cap blank, Fig. 1 (not shown), in which the skirt 3 has first been formed is then bent around the bottle &c. neck. The parallel sides of the elongated hole 23 are deformed by the bending process, thus preventing damage of the score lines (11, 12), 13, 14 on the inside of the metal cap 1 by strains set up during the bending process. The notches 21, 22 also assist in preventing bending strains damaging the score lines. The ear 6 of the tear strip 15 has embossments 6a which enable the tear strip to be easily gripped when removing the cap 1 from the bottle &c. In a modification, Figs. 12-14 (not shown), the score lines are formed on the outside of the cap. Elongated openings 23 of any shape may be used and in a modification illustrated in Figs. 10, 11 (not shown), one end of the opening has a bulbous form (64) to facilitate gripping of the ear 6.
