Abstract

1,079,722. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. April 3, 1964 [April 19, 1963], No. 10750/63. Heading F2E. In a disc brake having a caliper 15 straddling the disc 10 and in which two pads 21 are applied to opposite sides of the disc, one directly by hydraulic or other means and the other by the reaction on the caliper, the latter is carried on a stationary part 26 by circumferentially spaced pegs or bolts 27 whose axes are inclined with respect to the plane of the disc and relative to which the caliper is movable against spring loading. As shown, each bolt 27 has a shoulder 29 of small axial length which is substantially of the same diameter as the bore in the caliper and the remainder of the bolt within the bore is of substantially smaller diameter which permits the caliper to move relative to the bolts on application of the brake. A resilient washer 31 applies an axially directed force holding the caliper in engagement with the stationary part 26. The axes of the bolts are at right-angles to a plane 28 containing the line of the drag force applied to the pads by the disc and the points on the bolts through which this force is transmitted to the stationary part. In a modification the caliper is connected to a bifurcated leaf-spring whose leg portions are secured to the stationary part by bolts whose axes are at rightangles to the plane 28 in which the spring lies.
