Abstract
In an arrangement for detecting the foaming of slag in an iron-refining converter, a signal proportional exclusively to the level of sound having a frequency in the range 100 c/s to 600 c/s is obtained by apparatus comprising a microphone positioned above the converter and feeding an amplifier, a band-pass filter, and a detection stage. The said signal is indicated on a strip recorder, an ammeter, or a "Magic Eye", and the band-pass range is preferably 150 c/s to 300 c/s. In a specific embodiment the microphone is mounted on a sound guide in a hood over the converter, in which molten pig-iron is transformed into steel by top-blowing with an oxygen-powdered chalk suspension blown down a lance.
