Abstract

1,071,446. Radar. COMPAGNIE D'ETUDES ET DE REALISATIONS DE CYBERNETIQUE INDUSTRIELLE. Jan. 21, 1966 [Jan. 29, 1965], No. 2988/66. Heading H4D. The distance of the tip of an oxygen lance above the surface of a pool of molten metal is determined by measuring the distance of that surface from a point on the lance, at which point an object is injected to drop through the lance to the pool, by means of a Doppler radar connected to a counter. The lance may be maintained retro-actively at a desired distance from the pool's surface. If the latter becomes too agitated continuous distance measuring becomes impossible; the radar is then made bidirectional or a second Doppler radar is provided, together with a stationary reflector, lance movements being controlled relative thereto.
