Abstract

1,079,545. Heat transmitting media. HOOKER CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Dec. 4, 1964 [Dec. 9, 1963], No. 49485/64. Heading F4U. A closed heat transfer system which may include a reservoir heated by a conventional heat source, contains a heat transmitting medium comprising a major portion by weight of an alkali-metal hydroxide, a minor proportion by weight of a non-reducing agent, and preferably also a corrosion inhibitor; the mixture in use being heated to a temperature ranging from 250‹ to 1250‹ F. Sodium hydroxide is the preferred alkali metal hydroxide but the hydroxides of potassium, sodium, lithium, rubidium, cesium or mixtures thereof may be used. The non-reducing agent may consist of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal sulphate, phosphate, halide, carbonate, stannate, silicate, fluosilicate, fluoborate, tetraborate, meta, borate, aluminate, bismuthate, borate, borite, sulphate, sulphite, molybdate, tungstate, vanadate, nitrate, nitrite, manganate, permanganate, chlorate, perohlorate, persulphate, chromate, dichromate, hypochlorite or oxide, or mixtures of two or more such compounds. The corrosion inhibitor used will depend upon the heat transmitting medium and the metal container utilized and may consist of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chromate, dichromate, phosphate, pyrophosphate, manganate, permanganate, tetraborate, ferrate or iron, or mixture of two or more such compounds.
