Abstract

1,077,107. Electrophotographic apparatus. ING. C. OLIVETTI & C S.p.A. Aug. 4, 1964 [July 17, 1963] No.30915/64. Headings G2A and G2H. In a photo-copying machine a document 50 may be copied upon either a pre-cut photo-sensitized sheet 74 fed into the machine with the document, or upon photo-sensitized paper fed from a roll 132 and cut to length within the machine, a manual switch being provided to temporarily disable the means which dispense and cut the paper from the roll when a pre-cut sheet is fed in. When the document is copied on to a pre-cut sheet, the document and sheet are loosely held together to align the sheet which is then inserted in a passage (72) Fig. 2 (not shown) while the document is inserted in a passage 52. Sheet 74 is moved by rollers 76, 78 through a knife unit 82 (disengaged in this instance) and then through a corona discharge device 88 to an image location station 93. At this instant the document 50 reaches the exposure window 66, illuminated by a lamp 100. An image is formed on the sheet 74 by means of mirrors and a focusing lens system 108, an adjustable screen 110 being provided to adjust the total light received at 93 and hence vary the strength of the electrostatic image on sheet 74. The sheet passes next to a developer 118, magnetic carrier particles mixed with a tribo-electrically chargeable developer powder, being spread across the sheet by a rotating magnetic brush 300, the powder adhering only where a charge occurs. The powder is heated and fused into the sheet 74 in a fuser unit 120 which is cooled by a centrifugal blower 144 which also cools the lamp 100. The finished copy is expelled over plate 128. When the machine operator selects the automatic roll feed of copy paper, driven rollers 136, 138 withdraw paper 130 from the roll 132 (stored in a light-tight compartment 134) and feed it around guide 142 past the knife 82 which cuts the paper into the required length. The machine then operates as before. A curved repeater guide 143 is provided for making multiple copies.
