Abstract

1,076,663. Poultry batteries. SHEPHERD BROS. (BAXENDEN) Ltd. Jan. 25, 1966 [Feb. 22, 1965], No. 7464/65. Heading A1M. The droppings boards 15 of a battery cage system are cleaned by scrapers 23 connected to individual wire loops 24 passing over pulleys 25-27 and looped over a drum 35 mounted for rotation about its axis and also for longitudinal movement along its axis in co-ordination with the rotation. The drum 35 is driven by an electric motor 38 and is integral with axial threaded rods 36 which extend through correspondingly threaded eyes 37 on the battery frame 10 so that axial movement of the drum occurs as it rotates. Alternatively the drum may move by means of a rack and pinion mechanism. Each scraper 23 has a chevron-shaped working surface and a pair of side cleaners and is attached to the wire so that the scraper blade is pressed into contact with the board in one direction of movement and is raised in the opposite direction. Switches 42 are provided for reversing the motor 38. The drum may also drive hoppers 20 delivering feed to troughs 19. Each cage is provided with a nipple drinker 22. The drum 35 may be formed by interlocking segments and may be mounted with its axis horizontal as shown or vertical.
