A route indicator on a vehicle comprises a drawer 4, Fig. 4, which can be withdrawn from a frame 1 secured to the vehicle dash board and in the drawer 4 a strip 10, showing a pre-selected route, extending between spaced rollers 8, 9 and driven in accordance with the vehicle's progress. The strip 10, Fig,. 3, is driven from the speedometer drive by a pinion 21 meshing with another 17 which through a hollow shaft 18 and spring urged spindle 19 drives a friction disc 23 which drives a disc 22 on the shaft of the spool 9 through discs 25 carried by a sleeve 24. As the diameter of the roll of the strip 10 on the spool 9 increases a roller 29 on a bracket lifts a slide 27 carrying the sleeve 24 and by moving the discs 25 nearer the centres of the discs 22, 23 reduces the angular speed of the spool to keep the linear speed of the strip 10 constant. The reduction ratio in the drive from the speedometer is selected to suit the scale of the route map. The drawer 4 has a side door to facilitate changing the strips and a front door 5 fitted with a viewing lens. Illumination is provided from the rear. An index mark or scale is provided on a strip 34 adjustable across the strip 10 by a knobbed spindle 37. The strip may have perforations for actuating spring strip contacts to give warnings and/or to switch on a tape recorder reproducer to provide a commentary on the route.
