Abstract
1,075,703. Billet piercing; extruding. FIELDING & PLATT Ltd., and H. J. SAMUEL. Aug. 23, 1965 [Sept. 7, 1964], No. 36610/64. Headings B3H and B3P. An hydraulic extrusion press has its extrusion stem 15 actuated by a main ram 3 and a piercing mandrel 10 actuated by a differential cylinder or cylinders 9 which also effect withdrawal of the mandrel and the extrusion stem. The main piston 3 has a rear extension 4, 5, co-operating with rods 7 secured to a mandrel crosshead 6. A solid billet in container 11 is first compacted by the stem 15 which is then withdrawn slightly by jacks 13 whilst the piercing mandrel 10 is forced through the billet. During subsequent withdrawal of the mandrel, nuts 8 on the rods 7 engage the main ram extension 5 to effect its withdrawal. The withdrawal of both the stem 15 and mandrel 10 may be started by the jacks 13.
