[Also in Divisions B8 and F4] In a fluidised bed reactor for chemical or physical reactions on a material, the material passes through a treating chamber 12.2 in boxes 13.2 carried on an endless, perforated conveyor belt 10.2 and is fluidised by conditioned treatment gas passing upwardly therethrough in a series of spaced parallel streams from gas supply ducts 15.2, and at least a portion of each fluidising gas stream is abruptly returned to pass downwardly through the bed in a plurality of spaced streams to roll or tumble the material. The gases pass into gas return ducts 20.2, 21.2 intermediate the supply ducts for passage to a gas supply fan and heater or cooler (not shown). An exhaust duct outlet 29.2 is positioned in the top of the chamber for vitiated gas and a screen belt 32 driven about pulleys 33 travels above the top of the boxes to hold the material therein. The boxes 13.2 may have some or all of their peripheral sides sloping outwardly to expand the upwardly flowing gas streams so as to lose velocity and drop the material out of suspension. Stationary baffles, Fig. 4 (not shown) mounted above the conveyor may replace the boxes. The velocity of successive fluidising gas streams may diminish to compensate for increasing lightness of material, or several successive treating chambers may be utilised. Fig. 16 (not shown).
