Abstract

A heat exchanger for two separate fluids comprises at least one cylindrical block with flat end faces and having fluid channels extending through concentric annular zones of the block, one alternate set of channels being intended for one of the heat-exchanging fluids and the other alternate set being intended for the other fluid, any two adjacent channels in a zone being parallel to one another and each channel being inclined in relation to a radial plane passing through its entry end. All the channels in the block may be inclined in the same direction (Fig. 3) or the channels in adjacent zones may be of opposite inclinations (Fig. 4) in relation to a radial plane of the block. The fluids pass in contraflow directions through their respective channels and are collected at each end of the block (or the assembly of blocks in a multiblock heat exchanger) by manifolds (Fig. 5) which interconnect the respective channels and conduct the fluids to inlet and outlet headers which may have a graphite lining. In a heat exchanger comprising a plurality of blocks, corresponding channels in adjacent blocks are of opposite inclinations to create turbulence in the fluids as they pass through the channels (Fig. 1).
