Abstract

107,453. Fairweather, E. July 31, 1916. Securing toothed wheels on shafts; variablespeed gearing.-In variable-speed gearing of the sliding spur-wheel type, certain of the wheels are connected to their shaft by coil or leaf springs and carry lugs which engage with lugs on parts secured to the shaft only after the wheels have rotated a substantial part of a revolution. Sliding wheels 5, 6 on the driving-shaft 1 may be slid into engagement with wheels 7, 8 loose on a lay-shaft 10 which carries a fixed wheel 18 gearing with a wheel 19 driving the shaft 20. The wheels 7, 8 are connected to the shaft 10 by springs 24, 22 and carry lugs 11, 14 engaging with lost motion lugs on sleeves 12, 16 fixed to the shaft.
