Abstract
1,074,045. Making electrical connections. THOMAS & BETTS CO. June 12, 1964 [June 14, 1963], No. 24585/64. Heading B3A. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for feeding wires 25 to a standard terminal attaching machine 20 comprises a hopper 28 and a rotary feeding drum 30. In operation, individual wires are guided into one of slots 30a formed in the surface of the drum 30. As the drum is indexed around to a feeding station 38, the wire, which may be bent, is flattened into slot 30a by a shroud 31. The drum 30 is indexed by a pawl which is connected to a ram 24 of the terminal attaching machine 20. When it arrives at the feeding station 38 the wire is forced outwardly by an idler wheel 43 into contact with a feed wheel 32 which urges the wire forward into a terminal attaching station 23 of the machine. A similar arrangement comprising an idler wheel (34a) and, a driven wheel (34) pre-positions the wire closely adjacent the end portion (30b) of the drum, Figs. 1, 3 (not shown). As the wire is fed forwardly it passes through a wire guide (46), Figs. 7, 8, 9 (not shown), which includes a spring (48) for urging the wires upwardly to improve gathering of the wire strands by the crimping tool 24a. A rubber stop (51), Fig. 8, may halt the inward movement of the wire and sensing means (50) may control the wire feed. Fig. 2 also illustrates a wire presence sensor 36 which, if no wire is present in a slot (30a), causes a wire-feed pawl (26), Fig. 3 (not shown), to be inoperative and no terminal is positioned in the station 23. The wire 25 having been positioned, the crimping operation takes place, a severing tool 52 cuts the terminal 22 from a strip and the pawl (26) ejects the crimped-on terminal and wire. 'The next terminal is also fed into position by the pawl and the drum 30 is indexed one position while another wire is fed to receive a terminal. In Figs. 11, 12 (not shown), the terminals and wires pass into an exit guide (53) before dropping into a wheeled hopper (54).
